MP3 vs WAV for AI separation: what actually changes
Understand source quality, export choices and why converting MP3 to WAV cannot restore lost information.

Start with the best source you already have
Use an original lossless recording when available. If MP3 is your only source, upload that file directly. Converting it to WAV increases the file size but cannot recover information removed by lossy encoding.
AI separation and audio encoding are different operations. The model estimates source parts from the mix; MP3 compression approximates the signal to reduce file size. Neither a WAV extension nor a higher export bitrate proves a clean vocal.
Input versus export
| Decision | Practical consequence |
|---|---|
| Original WAV or FLAC input | Avoids an additional lossy input encode |
| Existing MP3 input | Convenient, but its compression artifacts remain part of the source |
| MP3 export | Smaller download for listening and sharing |
| WAV export | Suitable for further editing; it does not undo input or separation artifacts |
Check the formats actually offered by your task before choosing. AIstemify currently accepts MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A and OGG, within 50 MB. Available WAV and MP3 exports appear in the task list.
A fair comparison you can repeat
- Begin with a lossless recording you own, and make an MP3 version with a known encoder setting.
- Submit both versions using the same separation tool, avoiding unrelated EQ or volume changes.
- Compare the same chorus and quiet passage at similar loudness.
- Listen for cymbal smearing, watery vocal sounds, sibilance and instrument bleed.
- Keep the input format and encoder setting in your notes. Do not infer a universal winner from one song.
Our public synthetic examples use WAV inputs and actual MP3 outputs. They are not an MP3-versus-WAV benchmark; we have not presented a matched input-format quality study here.
File size and billing
An uncompressed file may reach the 50 MB upload limit sooner than MP3. Lossless FLAC can reduce size without a lossy encoding step, although compression depends on the recording. Duration billing is the same for accepted formats: at least one credit, one credit per rounded minute.
What WAV cannot fix
WAV export cannot restore clipped peaks, missing frequency detail, a bad recording, or a separation decision that removed part of an instrument. Improve the input or choose a tool suited to your intended output before changing the container format. Download your result before its expiry date and retain the original alongside it.
